For Valentine's Day this year, my friends and I decided to have a little party. We taped some hearts up on the wall and invited some of the kids and teenagers that we are friends with over to our apartment for the evening. We made french toast, eggs, and pancakes for dinner, had some hang-out time, played a game, and ordered Jonah's fruitshakes. It turned out to be a really fun evening!
I thought it might be fun for those of you reading my blog in America to "meet" one of my students on camera. Below is a video of an interview I had with a boy in my first grade class named Shawn. He is describing a picture he drew about his family, his favorite food, his favorite subject, and his favorite hobby.
In the video, I ask Shawn how he learns about the computer. He didn't answer, but I thought I would tell you that our school has only one computer that only works sometimes. Hopefully, the school will be able to afford more computers in the future, but for now the students learn about how to use a computer by using a textbook. Can you imagine trying to understand how to type on a keyboard or use a mouse by using a book?
We do have volunteers that take students out one by one to learn to use the computer when possible, which is a big help. Knowing that my students learn about computers this way has made me more thankful for the computers in my classroom at J.R. Watson and the computer labs that we have!
The pictures below show what a few of the other students in my class drew about themselves:
